The property this cemetery is located on was first deeded to William Mathers Old Tract Book 1, page 6 for 160 acres on Dec. 28 1816, this was homesteaders land and had no previous owners. This land remained in the Mathers family for the next 110 years.
The first recorded burial in this cemetery was that of
Thomas J. Mathers June 15 1847.
This took place 20 years before the births of John and Sarah Haworth that are buried in this cemetery as did many other Mathers burials.
In researching the property deeds on file at the Crawford County Court House I find that ownership for this land changed from the Mathers family to the Haworth's in January 1926.
This cemetery should not be confused with the Mathers Chapel Cemetery 6 tenths of a mile to the Northeast along Highway 64.

The Mathers Homestead Cemetery is located on the south side of Highway 64 about 1.3 milis east of (Old) English Indiana.
About 500' Northeast of the Post Office in (New) English Indiana and 400' Southeast of edge of pavement of Highway 64. In a wooded area at the southwest corner of a pasture.
The cemetery measures about 100' x 100' and contains about 40 headstones. Many of the headstones are plain field stone with no inscription others are beyond reading and broken.I will insert photos of all that could be identified and link them to the persons memorial.

This cemetery is on private property.
Records indicate that when visited in 1954 it was a beautiful and well kept cemetery but a later visit in 1969 states "Only a few stones were standing and the entire area was overrun with cattle and the stones were found under decaying grass, honey suckle and wild roses.
