The Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Cemetery is located in Calvin Township, Cass County, MI next to its church. The DAR readings of 1943 state that majority of the burials in this cemetery consisted of colored residents of the township. The earliest known burial is Lydia Ann White who died at the age of 18 in 1858.

The Calvin Settlement was home to many families of mixed ancestry from Virginia and North Carolina. A number were of either of Native American or mixed Native American/African ancestry.

Next to the cemetery is the Bethel Church African Methodist Episcopal Church. It was organized in about 1856 by by the Rev. Richard Johnson. Their first meeting place was in the local log school house. The current building was erected in 1870 with its lumber being hewed out by Rev. Richard Johnson and Bill Dungey.
