The Provincial Hospital (later Centracare) was a fixture on Lancaster Heights from 1848 until its relocation in 1998.
The Insane Asylum, which became the Provincial Hospital in 1903 then Centracare in 1978, was first located on Leinster Street in the old quarantine hospital. It was the first mental hospital in Canada. The capacity of the building was quickly surpassed and numerous other buildings were built at different localities. On June 24, 1847, the cornerstone of the future site was laid. The location was chosen because of its proximity to the Reversible Falls Rapids.
On December, 1847, the 90 patients residing at the temporary hospital were transferred to the new facility. Throughout the remainder of the century the site was extended and expanded to house further patients. In 1885, a farm of 250 acres was purchased and used to house 150 patients. This "ANNEX" was located on Sand Cove Road and was used to grow and raise food for the patients.
Between 1929 and 1936 the last major construction was finished. When all construction was completed, the facility included a farm, a freezing plant, a recreational hall, a movie theatre, and a chapel. Throughout the years, the Lunatic Asylum had many name changes to keep up with the political correctness of the society of the day. In February of 1998 the old facility was closed. Centracare Saint John Incorporated is no more and is now called the Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation.
