North from Wyndmere, Richland County, North Dakota – about an 8 minute drive for about 5.5 miles. Drive north out of Wyndmere on Rt 18 (157th Ave SE). Turn right on Rt 10 (76th St SE), then north on 158th Ave SE.
Homestead Church and Cemetery was first built in 1908 on the SW corner of the SW quarter of Section 11 of Hopewell Township in Richland County. The church was very active between 1910-1940. The original building was destroyed in a windstorm in 1937. In April 1938 construction began on a new church which still stands in 2024. On 28 Dec 1971 the Homestead Lutheran Church dissolved its congregation and changed to the Homestead Lutheran Cemetery Association with this purpose: "The Homestead Lutheran Church will remain as a church, stand as a landmark and a memorial to the pioneers for their courage, fortitude and dedication to the plains." From A History of Homestead Township, by Ethel Olson, 16 Feb 1973, page 23
Today in 2024, the Homestead Cemetery Association continues to preserve the church and uses the cemetery for burials. It has an active association which is active with many members and significant funding, and maintains the property very well.
