The Kunkel Family Cemetery is on private land, located on the former Kunkel Ranch in the area formerly known as Mission Valley, later owned by Reinhold J. Haug, and now owned by his descendants. Permission is needed for access. In the past, each individual grave was covered with cement, approximately 4 inches high, and the remaining area was covered with gravel. The cemetery was enclosed with a chain link fence, still present. As of Feb-2018, the cemetery has become overgrown with brush and overhanging tree limbs, some of which were removed to allow photos. Outside the fence, and to the right of the gate, is reported to be one grave, covered with stones. The headstone is of marble, now broken into several pieces. No name or dates are visible. It is suggested that the person buried here may be Dean, a long-time male employee of the Kunkel family.
The cemetery is marked on the county map series published by the Texas Dept. Of Transportation, although it is not marked with a name. On the same map, another cemetery about a mile to the west is INCORRECTLY labeled with the name Kunkel. The same error is present on the GNIS list of cemeteries of Comal County. In reality, the Kunkel-labeled cemetery is the Gesche Cemetery (in Find A Grave, as CID# 2658270). GPS coordinates given here in Find-a-Grave are correct since they were measured on-site when photos were taken.
