Stadtpfarrkirche St. Martin in Lauingen
Lauingen, Landkreis Dillingen an der Donau, Bavaria, Germany
Lauingen is a small town (about 11,000 inhabitants) in Dillingen County in Bavaria. Located not far from the Danube River St. Martin is the main church of the town. It is dedicated to St. Martin of Tours and was built in the 16th century. It's style is called late Gothic. During the time of the Reformation the crypt underneath the church was used as the final resting place for many members of the dukes of Pfalz-Neuburg.
Palatinate-Sulzbach was partitioned from Palatinate-Zweibrücken upon the death of Wolfgang, Count Palatine of Zweibrücken in 1569. His will provided that Palatinate-Sulzbach should be created out of Palatinate-Zweibrücken and ruled by his younger son Otto Henry. Otto Heinrich von Pfalz-Sulzbach died in 1604 without any heirs so Palatinate-Sulzbach passed to Palatinate-Neuburg.
During renovations in 1873 all remains were brought together and reburied in a large sarcophagus. Some of the original ornate coffins are now on display at the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum in München (Munich).
