In 2009 David Maurer of Sommers, Montana, the great grandson of Peter Maurer, visited the area to locate and pay respects to relatives buried in local cemeteries. He found the cemetery hidden by eighty years of volunteer tree growth, choked by vines, shrouded by invasive bushes and covered with layers of accumulated debris. In previous years, large farm animals were allowed to roam freely among its marble grave markers. It was this experience that prompted the preservation of the final resting place of many of his relatives and their neighbors. David contacted John C. Heider, a cemetery restoration specialist (R.I.P. Limited) and enlisted his skills to rebuild the Maurer Cemetery. The restoration was completed in August 2010.
The Peter Maurer Cemetery is located on a hill that greets the morning sunlight, and in the afternoon, is shaded by mature Oak, Osage Orange, and Hackberry trees. No longer hidden by unwanted vegetation, its natural prairie grass sways in a constant breeze that cools a welcomed visitor on a hot summer day. The Peter Maurer Cemetery now serves as an accessible, historical site in Woodford County.
The cemetery history began in September 1837, when Peter Maurer purchased 160 acres from Isaac and Polly Stout in sections 26 and 27 of McLean County. Today, County Road 75N separates this land which is southeast of Congerville. About 1843, Peter provided a small plot of land for a cemetery and its earliest burial on May 10, 1843 was that of Johannes Gerber. In 1873 Peter died, his wife Mary lived until 1880, and both share a common grave stone in the cemetery.
