In 1834, Varner sold his holdings to Columbus R. Patton, who represented his father, John D. Patton.
Known as Patton Plantation, the Pattons built the main house and developed the property into a sugar plantation. The property was sold by the family in 1869. The property now is known as the VARNER-HOGG PLANTATION STATE HISTORICAL SITE operated by the Texas Historical Commission. The site was also the home of former Governor of Texas, James S. Hogg and his family. It is located outside West Columbia, Texas in Barzoria County.
The marker in the cemetery now was put in sometime in the 1900's during the oil boom to replace the original markers that were stolen by vandals.
The brick walls of the original family cemetery were almost completely destroyed by hurricanes, but were partially restored. Originally made to be a 36 foot square cemetery, the white washed walls were seven feet high and sixteen inches thick. Each wall had a cast iron gate with a brick porch added on the north wall's gate.
