This inactive cemetery is located within the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, a part of the National Park system in Vancouver Washington. The site was first established in about 1825 by the Hudson Bay Company. In June 1860 this British company totally abandoned the Fort Vancouver and moved, leaving the fort and local village to the Americans. The Army occupied some of the buildings, but fire destroyed all visible traces of the fort by 1866. The current fort is a replica.
The cemetery was for employees and relatives of the Hudson Bay including American Indians, French Canadian fur trappers, Hawaiian workers, and American settlers from the Oregon trail. The Army later exhumed and reinterred many of the remains in other local cemeteries. However, it is reported by the Park Service that many unmarked burials remain. Exact boundaries of this cemetery are unknown, but it is located near the Army's Auditorium building, and under a parking lot and nearby empty fields. It is not currently marked. The names of the persons still in this cemetery are mostly unknown and there are no grave stones or markers.
