East Granby Smallpox Cemetery
East Granby, Hartford County, Connecticut, USA
This cemetery has been rebuilt. This location was historically known as Hatchet Hill. William Seymour was the owner of the property in 1939, and allegedly gave permission to the owner of a local stone collector, William Eli Talbot, to remove the headstones. Talbot cemented them into a cellar wall as part of a building behind his house in Bloomfield that he built in 1935.
Photos of the cemetery from 1932 are on file in East Granby Public library
This cemetery was created in the 18th century as a smallpox cemetery for Deacon Joshua Holcomb & his wife, Ruth Holcomb and several infant grandchildren (including 10 month old granddaughter, Ruth Ford), and likely several others based on local historian Tom Howard, "Surface indications lead us to believe there were other burials and likely headstones in the cemetery, but the individuals interred there remain unknown."
In 2014, the town of East Granby declared this to be a historically significant cemetery, and placed a fence around this burial ground to protect the area.
In October 2020, new memorial stones for Joshua, Ruth and the Holcomb children were placed on the graves, for stones that had been taken over 74 years ago.
