John and Margaret Ballenger Gravely Family Cemetery
This old family grave yard is located near the Holly Springs Baptist Church, grocery store and rural fire department. From the intersection of SC. Route 11 and US 178, travel on US 178 toward Rocky Bottom, South Carolina, and you will first come to the Rock Golf Course and a condo complex on the right. Look for a brown post marker, which was erected on the right hand side of the road, that intersects with a dirt driveway. If you pull into the driveway and park, the graves are up a small enbankment to the left. There are no legible grave markers in existence, except for the one new military marker for Private John Gravely Jr. But there are about 12 field stone markers for head and foot. Family tradition places the burials of John Gravely and his wife, Peggy Ballenger, here and probably their grandson, John Gravely Jr., who was killed in the Civil War. Some of the descendants of those buried here are found in the Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Porter's Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery and Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, which are all located in Pickens County, South Carolina. Descendants are also found in the [Joseph] Gravely Family Cemetery on Gladys Fork Road in Transylvania County, North Carolina. These four cemeteries are all located nearby.
