The John Crouch, Sr., Family Cemetery—From the town of Saluda, SC, drive south on Highway 178 toward Batesburg about 6 ½ miles. Turn right on Duncan Road. The first driveway on the right with a large gate is where the Crouch Family Cemetery is located. The cemetery is up the hill in a cow pasture belonging to the Padgett family of Batesburg, SC. The Crouch family is thought to have come from Virginia. John Crouch, Sr. and his sons Tolliver, Isaac, and Bailey, Sr. and their families settled on property circa 1788-1789 located on the waters of Richland Creek, a tributary of the Little Saluda River in the Old Edgefield District. The community was known as Mount Willing and had a cotton gin, a tavern and store. John, Sr. wrote his will on January 22, 1790. He was in poor health and it is thought he died the latter part of 1790. His will was proved in the June term of 1791. John and his wife Margaret are buried near their homestead on land that they had settled near the waters of Richland Creek. Besides their sons Tolliver, Isaac and Bailey, Sr., John and Margaret had two other children. John Crouch, Jr., was their first-born and was granted 200 acres of land in Wilkes County, Georgia, in August 1785. He lived just across the Savannah River from where his parents resided. Their daughter second-born was Elizabeth Crouch Bowlin. She was living in her parent's home per the 1790 census of her brother Bailey. She was most likely taking care of her father who was ill and her mother Margaret who is thought to have died in 1791. The John Crouch Family Cemetery has a number of tombstones that can't be read. There are many field stones (head and foot) that may represent where a person is buried. A family member ordered the military tombstones for John, Tolliver and Isaac in the 1980s, although it is now known that John Crouch, Sr., was not in the Revolutionary War. There are large upright granite stones such as those used for directions on roads and crossroads (milestones) that surround the Crouch Family Cemetery. At one time, there were cables that ran through the two holes in each stone to aid in spotting the cemetery and to protect it from the cows. A cyclone fence now surrounds the cemetery. Besides John Crouch, Sr., and his wife Margaret, it is believed that their sons and wives are also buried there—Tolliver Crouch and his wife Nancy Melton Crouch, Isaac Crouch and wives Elizabeth and Nancy, and Bailey Crouch, Sr., and his wives Mary West and Nancy Allen Matthews. There are a number of extended family members buried in the Crouch Family Cemetery, many unknown. The Edgefield Advertiser on November 2, 1854, advertised 7,000 acres of valuable lands for sale which included the Bonham Place, the Mount Willing homestead place, the Crouch Place, and valuable pine land. The Crouch tract of land contained 538 acres of land situate in the Edgefield District on waters of Richland Creek of Little Saluda River. This was land formerly owned by Isaac Crouch where the John Crouch Cemetery exists. West Corley bought this land and deeded the graveyard on the old Crouch tract to Simeon and John Crouch on February 20, 1856. Simeon and John, sons of Isaac Crouch, are both buried in the Crouch cemetery.
