Friedhof Pappellallee
Prenzlauer Berg, Pankow, Berlin, Germany
Pappelallee 15-17
10437 Berlin
This cemetery is no longer active. It's also known as Friedhofspark Pappelallee.
Founded in 1847 by the "Freireligiöse Gemeinde Berlin" ("Independent religious community of Berlin"), a religion that teaches religious humanism is an integration of humanist ethical philosophy with religious rituals and beliefs that center on human needs, interests, and abilities. The area was donated to the church by one of its members and in 1847 had a size of 1.5 acres. Originally open for burials of all faiths the congregation only buried "their own" at this grave yard starting in 1893. In 1907 a large gathering hall was erected, used for funerals and other meetings. In 1934 Nazi Germany confiscated the church's assets and properties. The cemetery became non-denominational and was now run by the city of Berlin. After WW II the property came to be in East-Berlin and the East German government continued to run this small grave yard as a non-denominational cemetery until 1969, when the last burials occured. After the last period of repose (25 years) had ended in 1994, the cemetery was re-dedicated as a city park. Some of the old grave markers are still present and due to historical significance some of the graves are kept as honorary graves of the city of Berlin.
