Add PhotosIn a deed dated July 16, 1918, a parcel of land was sold in the 15th Civil District of Coffee County for the "consideration of the sum of One Dollar" by Mack Ashley, "an unmarried man" to the Trustees of the African Methodist Church. The deed states that "This is where the old colored school house sits and a part of this lot is the colored grave yard. This ground shall be used as a burying ground for the Negroes, regardless of their residence." The deed was signed with Mack's mark (X), witnessed by McKinley Lawson and I. G. Merritt, notarized by Eugene Rayburn, N. P. and recorded by Floyd H. Adams, Register.
Originally spelled "Coal" Ridge, this area was named for its rich, black soil which was derived from chestnut trees that were burned in pits to make charcoal for the local blacksmiths. The old Coal Ridge Road is now passable on a four-wheeler or such. The old church was located on this site, and the cemetery was behind it. Graves were marked only with field stones.
Directions: From Manchester. At the main intersection take Hwy. 41 north west 12.2 miles and turn right onto Old Beech Grove Lane, then right again onto Old Cole Ridge Road. Cemetery is .5 miles up this rough dirt road that connects Hwy. 41 with Cole Ridge Road, on the left.
Thanks to Nora Murray and Laura Christmon for providing the burial information for this cemetery.
