Discovery of two human skulls and other parts of their skeletons buried together in a shallow grave some 18 inches beneath the surface of the hillside at the extreme western end of East Fourth Street during excavation for the construction of a new home brought Chief of Police Howard O. Landis and Borough Policeman Jay Rhodes to the spot on the double Friday afternoon when it was reported that foul play might have been committed and the evidence of a murder concealed.
However, after conducting an investigation with the help of a physician who declared that the bones had been interred for at least 100 years, it was decided that the remnants of an old family burial ground had been unearthed. And so digging was resumed on the construction of a new home for an ex-GI who with his wife had no domicile of his own since his discharge from the service.
The find was made on the lot adjoining the home of Chester A. Reed at No. 227. The new frame dwelling will be on lot No. 231. His son-in-law, Lee Elder, had been excavating at the home site. He expects to reside there with Mrs. Elder.
