[Christman Graveyard
As far as my family tradition goes the original spelling of Crissman is Christman. The original name of the cemetery was Christman Graveyard. The brothers who first settled in Adrian were John, Jacob, Philip and Frederick, (1790s) of whom, John donated the land for the cemetery and for Limestone Church. I have seen other versions stating that other people donated the land but I feel that is incorrect. The confusion comes to the fore because many called the cemetery the Crissman Cemetery in Montgomeryville hence the name Montgomeryville/Crissman Cemetery. And they associate the cemetery with the Montgomeryville Baptist Church which is also incorrect. It is only behind the Baptist church and was never owned by it as far as I know. My Christman's family members attended the Limestone Church and were not Baptist.]
****************************************
This small Christman / Crissman Family Cemetery is on a plot of ground that is less then one acre. It is located on the hilltop, behind the Montgomeryville Baptist Church and Cemetery, in Adrian, PA. Indeed, this small piece of land has more then one name and it is also known as the Montgomery Family Cemetery and the Church Parishioners also call it the Montgomeryville Baptist Cemetery Extension or Addition, however, in view of the preceeding statement, which was offered by Pat, I am not sure of the accuracy of all these names; only that this is what I was told by numerous people and therefore it will remain here until I can sort this out...I have even heard this place referred to as the Rich Hill Cemetery, although that is a mistake since that cemetery is located just outside Cowansville and calling it that has just added to the local confusion concerning a correct name for this cemetery.. Therefore, in accordance with Findagrave policy, I will include the names that it is called today or has gone by in the past. The gentleman, who used to care for this place and could probably have settled the name and the property line confusion, is now, himself, a resident of the cemetery; Harry Frick passed on, in 2007 and is buried here, but we do not know if he is in the Christman / Crissman, Montgomery or Montgomeryville portion of this place.
I am told, by the Funeral Director, at the Snyder-Crissman Funeral Home, just down the road, in nearby Cowansville, PA, that indeed this small place is officially divided into three separate cemeteries, as listed above and has been called at three different names, over the years. I was also told that he has been trying, for years, to find out where the dividing lines are; but to no avail. The cemetery or cemeteries is/are still active and there are new plots laid out and marked with stakes, waiting for the inevitable new entries. Therefore, this small cemetery will be entered as three different places in Findagrave. In order to make an attempt at keeping the confusion to a minimum and since the cemetery occupants are buried, in basically neat rows, I will place the Montgomerys, into the Montgomery Cemetery, the Christmans / Crissmans, into the Christman / Crissman Cemetery and the remainder of the individuals, who are buried here, will be placed into the Montgomeryville Baptist Cemetery, with a note on their monument as to their grave location, in the extension.
I realize this is not totally accurate because people, of other names, may be related to either the Christmans /Crissmans or Montgomerys, but until the property lines, if there are really property lines at all, can be ascertained, this will have to suffice.
All the names, for this place, must be listed here in an attempt to prevent duplication...but as Far as I know, the original name was Christman Graveyard andit was donated by members of the Christman Family.
Directions: From West Kittanning, Armstrong County, Pa., at the "Y," which is the intersection of Business U.S. Route 422 and Pennsylvania Route 268, drive 4.77 miles north, on Route 268, to the "Y" ,which is the intersection of 268 and Adrian/Reesedale Road. (If you cross the bridge over the railroad tracks, into Cowansville, you just missed this road.)
At this intersection, bear to the right on Adrian/Reesedale Road and drive 2.71 miles into the village of Adrian.
The Church and Cemeteries are, on the left, beside the road and just past the Railroad underpass, in Adrian. If you leave "town" without seeing it, you either went too far or you failed to stay on the correct road as you exited Adrian. For the Montgomery, Crissman or Montgomeryville Extension Cemeteries; when you turn into the Church driveway, instead of parking next to the church, continue, to your left, along the railroad tracks and up the hill for about a quarter mile, to the cemetery, on the right. As you start up the hill, this is a very rough dirt and shale road and if the weather is bad and you are in good shape, a hike may be called for.
