According to church records found at St. Paul's Anglican Church:
– A Brief History at https://www.stpaulsfe.com/about/our-history,
"The plot on which the church and cemetery now sit was obtained on 23 April 1821 by John Warren, Peter Plato, Benjamin Hardison and others who paid William Smith 200."
Records show burials began occurring at St. Pauls in the early 1820's. The following excerpt was taken from The Register of Saint Paul's Church at Fort Erie, 1836-1844 found at http://my.tbaytel.net/bmartin/forterie.htm:
"The Reverend William Leeming, who became the first minister made frequent entries of baptisms, marriages and burials at Fort Erie, Bertie, and Waterloo. Among the burials thus recorded in 1823 are Benjamin Hardison, aged about seventy on July 28, and Mrs. Warren, the widow of Commissary John Warren, aged eighty-three, on September 22."
Visiting St. Paul's Anglican Church Cemetery, a person will first notice how beautiful it looks with many old trees and gentle, rolling land. The grounds form a rough rectangle of approximately five acres with the stone block church sitting at the extreme east end of the property. The oldest cemetery headstones are mostly surrounding the church with the newer stones further away. A deep ravine forms a southern border of the property.
St. Pauls Anglican Church office cemetery records show there are just under 900 headstones with approximately 1650 buried over the past 200 years. A columbarium installed about 20 years ago contains 192 niches with approximately 60% of them containing cremated remains as of 2023. Most of the headstones are made with limestone. and a few from marble. Granite headstones began showing up towards the end of the 19th century. One or two flat headstones made from metal can also be found.
During the October 2022 to June 2023 time period, a Find a Grave Memorial for each of 1650 individuals buried at St. Paul's was created. Approximately 95% of these memorials include a photo of each individual's headstone, a burial plot number as well as a transcription of the information found on the headstone.
Another project also started during this time period was the cleaning of individual headstones. It will be many years before this task is completed.
Speaking to one of the St. Paul's cemetery managers in May of 2023 it was learned that very few future burials are being allowed at the cemetery as it is close to capacity. Use of the columbarium is being strongly encouraged by the church.
