Philip Walker Hemphill Cemetery
Rome, Floyd County, Georgia, USA
1014 Cave Spring Road, Rome GA 30161
This cemetery site is at Darlington School, in Rome, Georgia. The cemetery is behind the the former old home of Major Philip Walker Hemphill. The house is now the Headmaster's House at Darlington School. Darlington School is quite a large place and covers many acres, with many brick classroom buildings and dormatories. The graveyard is behind the house shown, which is the one Philip Walker Hemphill built in about 1826 and named Alhambra. Both the house and graveyard are on the Darlington School property.
Philip was a Major in the Georgia Militia. He was also a Co-Founder of Rome, Georgia.
This is a cemetery that no one knew was there until recently, when some tombstones were unearthed near the home/school, and a descendant of Philip Walker Hemphill, was then asked to officially name the cemetery, and he just did.
There is no plaque yet for the cemetery. It is currently being made.
There is another cemetery on Find A Grave, which has no entries in it. I don't know if that was intended to be the same cemetery or not, but the Philip Walker Hemphill Cemetery is now the official name for the cemetery behind the Hemphill house at Darlington School.
