Promise Land Cemetery
The cemetery is on the south side of the Promise Land Road about a mile west of the Marion--Baxter County Line. It is in the northern part of Marion County, north of Bull Shoals Lake, and not far from the Missouri border. It is situated on the Promise Land Ridge which became more or less of a peninsula when the Bull Shoals Reservoir was impounded and water covered the creek valleys to the north and south of the ridge.
Members of many of the pioneer families of the area are interred here. A large number of the older graves are designated by unlabeled fieldstones. The oldest marked grave dates to 1877, but some of the graves without identity may have been there longer than that.
There is a Board of Directors for the Cemetery Association that oversees the operation of the cemetery. An annual Decoration Day is still held at the cemetery each second Sunday in June.
Prior to the impounding of the Bull Shoals Reservoir, the Noe Cemetery was relocated from the river valley to an area adjacent to west side of the cemetery. That family cemetery is surrounded by a rock and masonry wall. In recent years, the Promise Land Cemetery has enlarged so that now the Promise Land Cemetery extends to the south of the Noe Cemetery.
