The township of Wyandotte was first settled by members of the Wyandotte Tribe of Indians from Kansas who started the gold mining before 1850 and left when the white man came. The Rice brothers (four) were the first white settlers in the area. By the end of 1850, over 200 miners were working in the area. A canvas store with saloon put up in the winter of 1849/1850 was the first building. In 1851 a 12 stamp quartz mill was built to crush quartz for gold. In 1856 a brick hotel was added. A Sunday school was established in 1854. The first burial was noted about 1852. During the first four years, there were five or six burials. The first monument was for Mrs. Ann Foote, a native of NY who died 4 Mar 1856. Her burial was the fifth in the new cemetery. The care of the cemetery was taken over by the Oroville Cemetery District in January 1985. The first record of burials was compiled in 1978 by Mrs. Charlotte Rutherford for the Paradise Genealogical Society.
