The African-American Antioch Baptist Church had its beginning in the 1880's in a little cedar grove about one mile from its present church. At that time, it was attended by white people only and was named the Philadelphia Baptist Church. The Antioch Baptist Church emerged from the Mars Hill Baptist Church to this little cedar grove. Members of the congregation were successful in their effort of improving the church, and the membership grew to about 50. With such heavy attendance the Pastor and Deacons felt they needed a larger place to worship. And so it followed that in 1894 the church officials were able to purchase two pieces of land from the local white folks for the hefty sum of $200. The white people of the Philadelphia Baptist Church then moved to another church carrying the name of Philadelphia Baptist Church with them, thus Antioch Baptist Church was founded and so named.
