Pumphrey Fraser Walker Family Cemetery
Upper Marlboro, Prince George's County, Maryland, USA
UPPER MARLBORO, MD 20772
This cemetery once was the Charles Hill farm but has now been turned into a housing subdivision. The county did order that the house and cemetery shall be protected and a fence had to be installed with a history marker for the cemetery. A perpetual maintenance had to be put in place and the Historical Preservation Committee would be involved and the cemetery had to be preserved and protected.
The house on the property is a side-hall and double parlor plan plantation home These types of homes were built by successful small plantation owners in the mid-nineteenth century. This house was built in the 1840's by Rector Pumphrey on land he inherited from his father, John Pumphrey. After Rector Pumphrey died in 1877 it was passed to his widow and then his son James. In 1941 it was sold to the Davies family where an easterly kitchen addition was put on. Charles Hill was always known as Blackland in the nineteenth century.
The small family cemetery sits a short distance to the northwest of the house.
