Memorial Square is the site for the oldest cemetery in Victoria, Texas. What it was originally called is lost to history. Since 1899 the site has been known as Memorial Square.
Victoria was founded in 1824 by Don Martin De León y Galván. Soon a cemetery was laid out at the location of Memorial Square. This location was used for the burial of the early settlers. Some were soldiers who served under General Zachary Taylor who were encamped near here en route to fight in the Mexican War.
In 1846 a cholera epidemic broke out and many were buried here by a local man given the name "Black Peter".
As the community grew a larger plot of land was purchased in 1850 becoming Evergreen Cemetery. Some graves were relocated to the new cemetery but it is not known if the number relocated was recorded.
During the civil war soldiers were buried here. After the war some members of the occupying federal army destroyed many headstones resulting in many graves becoming unknown as to who or where a person is buried.
Again in 1876 an outbreak of yellow fever required the burial of many citizens in a mass grave in the old cemetery.
Memorial Square has been designated as a Historic Texas Cemetery.
