Magdalenen-Friedhof
Kirchhofstraße 35
12055 BERLIN
Tel (030) 56 82 57 33
The original name was Friedhof der Evangelischen Kirchengemeinde Magdalenen in Berlin-Neukölln. This is a small (1 acre, 6858 sq mt) cemetery located in the middle of a densely populated urban area. It's owned and run by the Lutheran congregation of the Magdalene Church. The cathedral style church is located across the street, and was constructed between 1877 and 1879. Largely spared during World War II, only some windows were damaged. The cemetery itself did not suffer any damages between 1939 and 1945. The former main entrance to the graveyard, a large sand stone gateway with angels on top of the two columns located at Karl-Marx-Strasse, has been closed; the only way into the cemetery is through the small gate at Kirchhofstrasse 35 around the corner.
Please note that the final resting places in Germany are not eternal, due to lack of space. This cemetery has a "period of repose" of 20 years. Unless the family of the deceased pays for another "lease" of 20 years, or the grave is of historical importance (in that case the city of Berlin will carry the costs), it will be leveled and re-used. Leftover stones will be collected and eventually crushed and used as gravel in road construction.
