The church was established in 1896. James McGown was one of the founding trustees. This landmark still stands in 2008 but it is no longer in use. The last service was held there in 2003.
On Sept. 15, 2002, many churches in the area joined with the members to celebrate the 106th anniversary of Bright Water Church. Some of the officials present were Rev. Jasper L. Scott (Guest Minister), Rev. Mary L. Coleman (Pastor of Bright Water AME Church), Rev. Earl A. James (Presiding Elder) and the Rt. Rev. C. Garnett Henning, Jr. (Bishop).
Surnames of the ones interred in the cemetery are: Andrews, Badger, Boss, Bracy, Brown, Burkett, Carroll, Davis, Esters, Gayden, Geams, Handy, Haynes, Hill, Simmons, Turner, Vivious, Ward, Young and many more that are unmarked.
The oldest known grave is of Alfred Badger in April 1924. The newest grave is of Thomas Lee Bracy in Feb. 2008.
Update: The old abandoned church building was torn down and burned in the Fall of 2008.
