Fayette County Farm Cemetery
Vandalia, Fayette County, Illinois, USA
A tax of 50 cents on each hundred dollars of taxable property in the county was levied, the valuation to be made by the possessor on oath in accordance with the current prices.
The taxable properties were town lots, carriages, distilleries, stock in trade, all iron bound carriages of every kind, clocks, watches and horses three years old and upwards.
In 1827, the taxable property included slaves, indentured or registered negro or mulatto servants, mares, mules, asses, neat cattle and "watches with the appendages".
The Fayette County Poor House was established between 1860 – 1865 in Shafter Township.
In 1910, the farm contained 200 acres and there were 38 residents. All who were able were put to work in the fields and orchards, and thus paid their way. Some of the people were placed there because they were poor, some for blindness or weak mind. Orphaned children also found a home there.
The first recorded burial in the Poor Farm Cemetery was 1878. The cemetery is located approximately 500' behind the brick building which was also known as the county nursing home. Built in 1894 the structure was 3 stories tall and replaced a small frame structure. The new three-story building would serve the county's indigent until 1949. According to county records, there are nearly 80 people buried in the Poor Farm Cemetery. About half have small headstones.
