GRANITE FALLS - An anonymous call led to the discovery of more than 50 graves buried underneath the property of the Wal-Mart under construction in Granite Falls.
A former state archeologist visited the site and a professional company was called in to remove the graves, said Linda Story, Granite Falls town manager. The unmarked tombs were moved last week to Sunset Hills Cemetery in Granite Falls. They remain marked as unknown.
The graves were found buried at the spot where a road leading to the super center will be built, Story said.
The graves date to the early 1800s, Story said. She said there was no record of the graveyard at the Register of Deeds Office. No one came forward claiming the graves, Story said.
All state laws regarding moving coffins were followed, Story said. She said the professionals hired to remove the graves did so with respect.
The property is owned by Lauth Property Group. Crews are still on target to have the land cleared by June 1, when construction on the building is expected to begin. Story said it should be another eight to 10 months after that before Wal-Mart is open.
