Two families are represented here - the Nalleys and the Strothers. There are about 25-30 graves, some of which are unknown infants' graves. The tallest monument is that for George William Strother, a CSA veteran of the 12th VA Cavalry. The "oldest" people buried here are John Strother and his wife, Julianna Brawner. Originally, the Nalley graves were outside of the old iron fence, and when the new stone fence was built, they were included inside the fence boundary for protection from the livestock and farm equipment. The Nalley graves are the most historically significant, as they are actually grave houses, not simple graves. They are one of only two known sets of grave houses in all of Virginia. They are made of a foundation of bluestone and lime mortar, topped by a little wooden house with eaves and a small window in the eastern eave. The wooden parts have all decayed and the stone foundations are in ruins, but the four markers still exist. A picture of the houses before they decayed may be viewed on the Library of Virginia web site in the WPA files. (PLEASE DO NOT POST THE PICTURE HERE UNLESS YOU HAVE EXPLICIT PERMISSION OF THE LIVRARY OF VIRGINIA.)
John Strother purchased the farm on which this cemetery lies from the Nalley estate, so the Nalley graves are the oldest. John spent many years trying to get a clear title on the Nalley property. A judge finally threatened to throw a special commissioner in jail if he did not issue a proper deed for John's purchase so many years before. John died a year after this was resolved.
Most of John's male children, their spouses, and some other descendants are buried here. Several are Confederate veterans.
The cemetery is now closed to new burials.
The restrictions placed on the cemetery for visitation and new burials are the result of a suit settlement agreement. Please honor this agreement.
