In November 1932, a road construction crew unearthed bones during a widening project of old US 12, now E Michigan Avenue. Workers discovered gravestones that carried burial dates as far back as 1831. Some of these century old slabs bore the names of Elias, Mary & John Corwin. Other stones marked the graves of the McArthur family.

Five pieces of broken white stone lie scattered among the rank weeds, vines and underbrush of the hillside. The only light they ever see is the thin cold glow of the winter sun. All other seasons they are shielded by the dense branches of scores of gnaried black locust trees, and other foliage. The five fragments with no discernable inscription to identify the departed soal they ere once dedicated the [sic] commemorate, are all that remains of the McArthur burial ground. Situated on the Northwest corner of Sutton Road and Old Michigan Ave., and listed on the township rolls simply as "Burial ground, tax excempt [sic]" the plot lies abandon and forgotten. Many Leoni residents are unaware of its existence. Although their grave markers have long since disappeared, the bodies of many early settlers still rest in peace among the rocks and roots of the grass matted hillside.
