The cemetery is named after NSDAR Patriot, Captain William Prowell where eight women have joined Harrisburg Chapter through his lineage. The first burial was for William's first wife Mary Margaret Nelson Prowell in 1756. The final Prowell family descendant to be buried was William's granddaughter, Elizabeth Prowell Hantz in 1879. For 120 years this, then grove of trees, was the final resting place for 38 of William's descendants. In the 1920's the Prowell farm was sold to the another family where it remains to this day. While the grove of trees is gone the cemetery still sits on top of the hill fenced apart from the rest of the cattle farm.
Given the uniqueness of this cemetery and that visitors are not allowed, Harrisburg Chapter asked the landowners if they could adopt the cemetery to provide annual maintenance. On October 8, 2022, the landowners herded cattle out of the pasture to make way for Harrisburg Chapter. Daughters came to restore as many headstones as possible with help from Colonel James Smith - Yorktown Chapter. At the end of the day, 34 descendants were identified, headstones photographed and mapped. Harrisburg Chapter will continue its work on a private basis with the support of the landowners.
