The Amity Cemetery is an African-American burial ground that was established by the Amity Missionary Baptist Church of Peterman, Alabama. The area was once known as Old Scotland and was changed to Tunnel Springs after the railroad spur line was abandoned. The line left a train tunnel in place, thus lending the community an appropriate name for itself. The area also gained prominence during WW-I when a number of area black men volunteered to serve in the Alabama 816th Pioneer Infantry, while others served aboard US Navy vessels as mess crew to aid the war effort.
