This still active cemetery has historically been for African-American burials of local residents. According to a 1992 N. C. cemetery survey, it was owned by the town of Waxhaw, NC, and is presumed to still be so. The burial grounds are behind residential homes that face Howie Mine Road and can be accessed by the side street that is considered its address, Cureton Street.
The earliest marked grave found is for Christene Cureton Massey (August 4, 1930).
Early death certificates will name the cemetery as being one of three African-American churches: Wesley Chapel AME Zion, Mt. Nebo Baptist and Shiloh Presbyterian (now known as First Presbyterian).
There are a number of graves in a tiered, wooded area that leads downhill to a creek. It is very possible that the wooded area is a different cemetery but it is adjacent to Eastside.
For at least three decades the Waxhaw School for African-Americans, built with funds from the Rosenwald Foundation, Union County and the community itself, was located very near this cemetery. A historical marker is now in place at the cemetery's sign indicating this.
