The Sacred Heart Cathedral is the parish church of the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Davenport. It was the first Cathedral in the United States to be dedicated to the Sacred Heart. The Cathedral sits on the site of the original Saint Margaret's (Ste. Marguerite's) Catholic Church and Cemetery. The first three Bishops of Davenport were originally interred beneath the Cathedral, but moved to Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery in 1930. Currently, there is a plaque in the vestibule honoring these Bishops. The Cathedral was historically sometimes referred to in the area as the "Cork Hill Cathedral." This was due in large part to the Irish neighborhood the Cathedral was located in, the largely Irish congregation, and Irish ancestry of many of the Bishops.
