Church History:
"The Powell Missionary Baptist Church was organized in 1878. The land upon which the church is built was given by the late Dr. Neal in 1879. The land was dedicated as a place of worship and for school purposes. Dr. Neal requested that the church be called Powell.
The first building, or place of worship, was a Bush Arbor, erected in 1879. Very soon a building was erected a few feet to the left of where the building now stands. That building burned in 1898, and the loyal band of men and women started working toward another building and the present building was built. An addition was made to the church in 1930, and another addition in 1947. In 1958 there was a substantial renovation, including plastered walls and the brick veneer. In 1964 a Corner stone was dedicated, later carpeting and new pews were added. An education building has now been completed, consisting of 4 classrooms, a lunch room and a kitchen. The present building is considered one of the best Negro church plants in this area of Georgia.
The present membership is over 700, of which many are young people. In all of its long history, the church has had only 5 pastors. Three resigned, one died, and the present past is Rev. W.W. Walker, . Rev Walker has been pastor for the past 40 years. The board of deacons, consist of: Jacob Carter, Chairman, Hampie Lee Couch, J.C. Walton, Clerk, Willie Dewberry, Eugene Dillingham, A.C. Willis and Sam Epps. Zannie B. Couch, president of the BTU and the Quarterly Usher Board." Source There Was A Land: A Story of Talbot County, Georgia and Its People.
