The "Nimmo Meeting House" was established by a deed of March 30, 1791 in which, for the consideration of five shillings, Anne Nimmo conveyed to the Society Of Members of The Methodist Episcopal Church, one acre of land at the fork of the roads leading from Sandbridge to Eastern Shore in Princess Anne County, Virginia. Today that same fork is located at Princess Anne Road and General Booth Boulevard in Virginia Beach, Virginia. In 1791, a simple meeting house was built on that land and even though the original church building has been significantly added to over the years, the original sanctuary, as seen in this photo, is still in active use today. The Nimmo UMC is the oldest surviving Methodist Church in continuous use in the state of Virginia. The sanctuary portion of this building has been witness to history from the earliest days of the United States. The "slave gallery", built into the sanctuary in about 1840, still overlooks the main sanctuary. Wooden plugs are still visible in the floor of the balcony that cover holes left by the iron shackles that were used to chain slaves. During the Civil War period of Nimmo's history, Princess Anne County was under the control of Federal troops and the church building was used to house the Federal troops and as a Federal hospital. Some of those Federal troops left their initials and the names of their sweethearts back at home carved into the posts that support the balcony in the sanctuary.

The cemetery at Nimmo UMC wasn't established until the early 1900s. However, once that cemetery was established, many older graves, from local private family cemeteries, were moved to the Nimmo cemetery. The names listed on the headstones at Nimmo serve as a chronicle of the early land owners and the early political leaders of old Princess Anne County.
