This cemetery is named after Vance Laurie, an early to mid-20th century land owner. Laurie was the grandson of Joseph Bonaparte Smith who owned the property in the 19th century and is buried on his home ground. Vance Laurie's great grandparents, William and Ann (Wylie) Smith, began obtaining land patents in the area around the cemetery by 1840. The cemetery is a burying ground for the Smith family and other families bound by marriage to the Smiths. In the late 19th and early 20th century, the small family cemetery was known as the Smith Cemetery. The cemetery is fenced and exhibits some maintenance beneath the towering cedar trees.
