In the undercroft, directly beneath the cathedral altar, is the crypt of Bishop Whipple, which was built 33 years after his death.
In 1987 a columbarium was built which will eventually surround the Bishop's crypt on 3 sides from floor to ceiling. The east wall, which is currently the only side constructed, contains 91 niches, each of which has a capacity of 4 urns. Upon the warm marble facing which closes each niche is engraved the family name as well as the birth and death year of the inurned. A memorial book is displayed in a glass enclosed case, mounted on the decorative iron grill fence. The memorial book contains further information about each individual. Directly behind the Bishop's crypt is a common grave covered by a bronze replica of the Cathedral shield, designed by Dean Slattery. The grave penetrates through the floor to the earth beneath the Cathedral foundation so that ashes may directly rest upon the earth, should this be desired. Units on the north and south walls will be added as demand an funds increase, permitting a total of 245 burial niches.
On this site, the columns are numbered 1 to 13 and the tiers from A to G.
