1942 F4F Navy Ferry Flight

On 13 Feb. 1942, four new Grumman F4F Wildcat fighters were on the last leg of a cross-country ferry flight from the factory in New York to the Naval Air Station, San Diego when the flight ran head-on into a severe winter storm. Three of the aircraft crashed, with one making a forced landing on a road near Ramona, in eastern San Diego County. The following day, a navy two-seat SNJ aircraft, searching for the three missing aircraft, crashed in the rugged San Rosa Mountains of San Diego County, killing both aboard. Only Ensign C.D. Davy, USNR, survived the ferry flight. See for more details: http://www.aircraftwrecks.com/pages/f4f-3a.htm
