Simpsonville Massacre dead

On January 25, 1865, a number of soldiers from Companies E and G of the 5th U.S. Colored Cavalry were guarding a Union Army cattle drive en route to Louisville. Outside of Simpsonville, Kentucky, they were ambushed by Confederate guerrillas. The poorly armed 5th USCC soldiers, apparently abandoned by their white officers, were overrun and massacred. 22 men were killed at the ambush site and buried in a mass grave by local people. Their graves have only been marked since 2009. Six other men died of their injuries at the New Albany, Indiana military hospital and were buried at the New Albany National Cemetery.
