146th Regt NYV

The 146th Regiment was organized in Rome, New York and was mustered into service there on October 10, 1862. It was orginally known as the 5th Oneida and later as the Halleck Infantry. On October 11 the regiment left for the seat of war and went into camp at Arlington Height, VA. On November 9 it joined the army of the Potomac. It was in the battle of Chancellorsbille under Hooker and acquitted itself with honor although suffering a heave loss. On the 10th of June the start was made for Gettysburg. here the regiment, with the 140th New York and the 91st and 155th Pennsylvania, charged and gained possession of "Little Round Top", the key to the position and held it during the entire engagement. On May 5 on the Wilderness battlefield the 146th suffered almost complete annihilation, losing nearly 400 in killed, wound and prisioners. The regiment also participated in several other important engagements and was thrice complimented in general orders for disguished gallantry. The 146th went to war with 1200 and returned with about 300.
