In March 1864 the 17th was ordered to Rome, Georgia. It was engaged in the three day battle at Resaca with heavy loss. The 17th fought almost daily from Dalton to Jonesboro. It fought at Cassville, New Hope, Kennesaw, Lost Mountain and Atlanta. It lost 130 men at Peachtree Creek. It lost a total of 586 men killed, wounded or captured from Resaca to Lovejoy's Station. The regiment moved into Tennessee with Gen John Bell Hood. It lost two-thirds of it's force at Franklin. A number of the men remaining were captured at Nashville.
