18TH ALABAMA INFANTRY

The 18th Alabama Infantry was organized September 4,1861 at Auburn with men recruited from the counties of Butler, Coffee, Coosa, Covington, Jefferson, Pike, Shelby and Tuscaloosa. A few weeks later, it went to Mobile by way of Huntsville. The 18th fought the first day at Shiloh and was detailed to escort a Union brigade, it had helped capture, to the rear and did not take part in the second day. At Chickamauga the regiment lost 22 out of 36 officers and 300 of the 500 engaged were killed or wounded. On Missionary Ridge the 18th lost about 90 men, most of which were captured. It began the Dalton-Atlanta campaign with 500 effective men and fought all the way to Jonesboro. It lost nearly half of it's men during that campaign. It went to Tennessee with General Hood and lost 100 men at Franklin, most of which were captured. In February 1865 the regiment was ordered to Mobile and placed in the field works at Spanish Fort. It participated in the siege of that place and escaped when it was evacuated. The 18th lost 20 killed and 80 wounded at Shiloh. It lost 56% of the 527 engaged at Chickamauga. It suffered 209 casualties at Chattanooga and by November 1864 was reduced to 275 effectives. Note- I welcome help sorting members listed in this cemetery who are actually members of the 18th Alabama Volunteer Infantry Battalion.
