Berrysburg Seminary

Including people known to have been affiliated with this rare, high quality seminary in Berrysburg, Pennsylvania (Dauphin County). This grouping includes students, instructors and other staff. The seminary was often pursued by students who had years in public schools as well, but the Seminary was not itself a public school. The closest it came, according to an 1864 report, was when one of the Berrysburg public school buildings was in such deplorable state ("entirely unfit for use") that the Seminary was used for a time that winter for public schooling as well, and it was noted to have "first class furniture".The original Berrysburg Seminary building built 1851, no longer stands. It had been sold to the town as a public school, and during the reorganization of 1879, the Seminary acquired the Town Hall as its newer home. The Harrisburg Telegraph reported that the Seminary applied for a charter in its December 27, 1880 newspaper. July 17, 1891 the same paper announced the old building was being razed to make way for a more modern structure. May 5, 1894 the Telegraph reported the Seminary had 65 students, and in June the graduation exercises had five graduates. In 1897 the head was Professor J. H. Myers, but with so common a name I have not been able to further identify him. I have yet to find an exact date of closure, but the last reference I can find to the seminary's being open is the May 8, 1903 edition of the Harrisburg Telegraph, which noted the number of students was increasing, then at 45. The school is noted for having graduated 961 students according to the Aug. 5, 1924 Harrisburg Telegraph.
