My Dad is Clyde Valentine Dean. I have contributed many updates and pictures. I have researched my family for 43 years. I did this before computers and afterwards. My Dad's family and my brother etc. are still living in the area. We owed the cemetery for many generations. My Family tree is enormous and I am related to the Dean, Easter, Westmoreland, Tolbert, Edwards, Bailey, Stover, Cook and the list is endless currently I am directly and indirectly related 20,058 family members. My DNA links me to both William Henry Harrison Dean I and Howel Harrison Dean I families. My mother and father share the same Grandparents 5 Generation back linking my Dean and Bailey family in a different way. I have traveled to Cana Carroll County, VA and Mt Airy NC since the day I was born. I have all the Marriage, Deeds on the family land including when My Dad and Mom and his family sold it, Funeral Home records, Military etc. for all generations. I took a break from my research due to cancer but I am back.

We owed Tolbert -Westmoreland Family Cemetery (Westmoreland)for many generations. John Ethen Dean purchased 12- and 9-acres Deed 51, Page 559, 02/18/1924, from J.T. and Eliza Dean. Purchased 13 acres from L.A. Sechrist, Deed 55, Page 54, 11/01/1927. Purchased 7 acres Deed 55 Page 55, 11/01/1927, from S.M. Westmoreland. John purchased a total of 41 acres of land equal to 24,345 feet. His estate sales were on 11/24/1952, Deed 102 Page 473. His 41 acres sold to James Husie Dean for $800.00. All this land was given by the family to Cena Dean and her daughter Margie Tolbert on 08/25/1959, Deeds, 1342 and 1344. After that the land went to Joseph Turner Tolbert (J.T.) Margie's son.
As we road Aunt Rosie told her story: John W. Westmoreland (28 April 1959. The Grantors (Sellers) Henry H.,et als. Deed 114. p. 491. Court Decree Same) lived at the top of the dirt road to the right and Uncle Henry lived to the right of his parents Joseph T. Dean and Eliza Tolbert's house, Grandpa Joe and Grandma Lizza. Mom (Zula Easter Payne Dean) sold the family land and house to Uncles Jim (James Husie Dean), because Calvin (Dean) right leg had been blown off during the Korean War (1950-1953). Calvin was having a hard time getting around in the mountainous land. We lived next to a creek. That is where we stored cold items, like cream. Mom decided to sell so we would could be in town (Mt. Airy, Surry Co. NC) Calvin also fought in World War II (1939-1945). Uncle Jim purchased the land and house for $800.00.
In the Grantor Index to Deeds on September 12, 1959, it shows Deed 118 pages 26-29 as follows:
"Fancy Gap 2A. page 26" being sold to Margie Tolbert. The Grantors (Sellers) Dean, Eliza's Heirs: Clyde V., Calvin J., Cena, Henry H., Jacqueline B., Johnny J., Jackleen W (Jaqueline W Dean), Kathleen, Jacqueline (Jacqueline B Dean) B., Rosie W., Virgie.
"Fancy Gap 4A. page 27" being sold to James H. Dean. The Grantors (Sellers) Dean, Eliza's and J.T. Heirs: Henry, Clyde D., Calvin J. James H., Johnny J., Jackleen (Jaqueline W Dean), (Kathleen, Jacqueline (Jacqueline B Dean) B., Rosie W., Virgie.
" Fancy Gap 38A page 29" being sold to Cena Dean. The Grantors (Sellers) Dean, Eliza's Heirs: Henry H., Clyde, Cena, Calvin J. James H., Johnny J., Jackleen (Jaqueline W Dean), Kathleen, Jacqueline (Jacqueline B Dean) B., Rosie W., Virgie.

Rosie explained that Uncle Jim (James Husie Dean) sold the land to the Vaughn Family. The Carroll County Court House Grantor Index Books show that Uncle Jim sold the land on 6 November 1965.

"Fancy Gap Dist. Tract. Deed 139 page 401" being sold to Floyd H. Vaughn and Pauline Vaughn. The Grantors (Sellers) Dean, James H.

Aunt Rosie explained that the Family House was torn down. A second Log Cabin now stands on the tract of land. The Bowman Family purchased this land from Uncle Jim and Aunt Cena on 22 May 1961. It is located on the left as you drive down the gravel road and turn right down the dirt road that takes you to the Westmoreland Cemetery. The grave yard is next to a cow pasture and the creek is in front of the grave yard.
"Laurel Fork Dist. 4.3/4 A. Deed 122. page 486" Notes: Carroll County to widen Road and also to designate Attorney in Fact. to be sold to: Joe E. Bowman, Ruth H. Bowman, Herbert Johnson, Esther Johnson, Henderson Johnson, Oma Johnson. The Grantors (Sellers) Dean, James H. Sena (Cena).
J.T. Tolbert (Margie Tolbert's son. Cena Dean was Margie's mother) explained that he owns about 50 acres of land. J.T. stated that he bought his land from the Bowman's. J.T., Aunt Marie, Uncle Robert, (Dean Whitaker) takes care of the Cemetery.
John Ethen Dean, purchased land in Carroll County on 18 February 1924. "Carroll County 12A 9A. Deed 51 page 559 "The Grantor (Sellers) was his father Joseph T. Dean. Joseph also sold land to his son James Husie Dean, on 24 March 1924. "Lovills Creek 261/2 A Deed 51 page 561".
On the drive out of the Cemetery, we all looked around and thought about our heritage. Aunt Rosie explained that the Deans' built their house in the mountains is to be next to a creek. The creek was used to keep food cold. Mom (Zula Dean) would send me and sis (Marie Dean Whitaker) to the Lovell Creek to get cream. She said Momma would always tell us not to drink the cream on the way back to the house. Rosie said her and Marie always drank a small amount of cream. It was so cold and tasted so good.
Rosie also told stories of Calvin chasing her around the yard on one leg. She said he could hop around on one leg, he was fast, eventually he always caught me. I was about 6 years old at the time. Aunt Rosie eyes filled with tears.
August 1, 1998, We met Rosa Lee Dean Elliott at Carroll County Library to do research on the Dean Family Genealogy. After the Library closed, we went to lunch and Aunt Rosie told this story: Mom (Zula Easter Dean Payne) explained to me (Rosa Lee Dean Elliott) that Dad (John Ethen Dean) was sick for two weeks before he died (7 April 1941). He left for work as usual. He came home several times during the day to check on me. I was about 11 months old. I was infected with the measles. He came home to tell "Zula to take care of that baby". He was extremely sick on this day. Later that day John Ethen did not return from work. The family went to look for him and found him dead under a tree. The autopsy showed the cause of death was a heart attack. The heart attack was caused by is ruptured intestine.

Through my 43 years of research, I have worked with many wonderful knowledgeable family members and researchers. I would like to make certain my family records are accurate before I leave this world. I am not a young woman.

Sincerely,
Gg Waltrip
