Bio

Having the name of Lafoy, I have traced it back to the 1700's in the Netherlands where it was once Lavooij and changed to LaFoy upon immigration to New York, USA in the mid 1800's. From one Jacob M. LaFoy who married a Kirkpatrick in Iowa and had 7 sons and one daughter. 5 of the sons moved to Saskatchewan around 1905 and settled in the Gray area eventually having a part in naming it Gray after Gray, Iowa. Around this time some LaFoys stopped using the capital "F". Many of my ancestors are also Scottish, Irish, English, and German. I am rooted in names of MacPherson, Gunn, MacLeod, MacKenzie, Rendall, Longman, Small, Waters, Burke, Quinn, Kirkpatrick, Warner UEL, and Wert. A DNA test would most likely have more Scottish and Irish origins despite the Dutch name and origin still being present. Some of my ancestors were in the US in the 1700's and were United Empire Loyalists making their way to Canada around the Revolutionary War. One fought against Napoleon at Waterloo and was granted land in Ontario from the King later. One thing is evident, most were sons of the soil or farmers just as many of the women were school teachers like myself, my parents, and grandparents. Many of the men also were soldiers during the various wars of their times including Waterloo, Revolutionary War, Fenian Raids, trenches of WW1, and the skies of WW2. Today I would identify as a proud Canadian with a strong multicultural European background. I also spent 8 years of my childhood in Jakarta, Indonesia and spent a year at school in Perth, Western Australia. I am what has come to be known as a 3rd Culture Kid. Third Culture Kids (TCK) or Third Culture Individuals (TCI) are people who were raised in a culture other than their parents' or the culture of their country of nationality, and also live in a different environment during a significant part of their child development years.
