Most of my contributions on findagrave are for members of the Townsend family, going back to John Townsend (1608-1668) from Oyster Bay, New York. My 3rd Great Grandfather was Absalom Townsend (1810-1888), who I have written a book about titled, The Travels of Absalom Townsend. He migrated from New York to SW Wisconsin in 1827 with his father Samuel Townsend (1783-1863) and older brother George Townsend (1806-1893). Absalom was one of the early "49ers" in the California Gold Rush and founder of the town of Rough and Ready, CA. in September 1849. He was also an early pioneer in the Montana Gold Rush, and was captain of a very large wagon train of 150 wagons and over 400 people on the Bozeman Trail to Virginia City, MT in 1864. Known as the "Townsend Wagon Train", they arrived at their destination on August 27, 1864, according to trip diaries, after an adventurous trip up the Oregon and Bozeman Trails.
