My Great Great Grandfather, Schuyler Gilbert and his wife Hancy Hills Gilbert left Tully, Onondaga County, New York and traveled to Wisconsin by covered wagon. They arrived in Wisconsin in 1845 and settled on land purchased in the Oregon Township in Dane County. They were one of the first pioneer families settling in this area and are included in the 1906 History of Dane County, Wisconsin on p. 319-320. After reading about the Gilberts and the Civil War military pension files of other grandfathers, James Best, Robert Fletcher, and Henry Lockwood I became inspired to learn more about these ancestors. It took many years to start the journey, but I’m thankful that I started down the track. Other family names that I will be following are: Baumgartner, Chatterton, Champenois, Egan, Hollibush, Moe, Searles, Wittwer among others.
