Bio

My father, James Eugene "Gene" Adkisson, was born June 25, 1925 to James Thedford Adkisson and Hattie Barnes Adkisson in Jewett, TX.

In 1921, Dad's mother was elected as Mayor of Jewett. She and five other ladies elected as Aldermen gave Jewett the honor of being the first city in the nation to be governed solely by women from 1921-1924. To recognize this milestone, I was able to have a Texas Historical Site Marker placed at her grave in the Jewett Cemetery.

My mother, Virginia Martin Adkisson, was born in the community of Martintown (which no longer exists) in Freestone County, Texas. Her family moved 5 miles to Buffalo when she was 10 years old. She and my father were the first couple to have a formal wedding in the new sanctuary of Buffalo's First Baptist Church on Sept 3, 1949. Mother passed away on March 16, 2008 and came back to get Daddy on June 5, 2008 -- this was the longest period of time they ever spent apart. They would have celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary on Sept 3, 2008.

I was raised in Dallas. After graduating from Sam Houston State University with a BBA, I worked in the telecommunications industry for 20+ years before being laid off. I continued my working career in software development for Mentor Graphics, the Texas Dept of Criminal Justice and then went to work for Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, in their Enrollment Services Division.

After finally deciding to leave the hustle, bustle of the city and working world, I quit my job in June, 2013. My husband and I left Georgetown and moved to Buffalo, TX. Ultimately, we built our retirement home on ranch land outside of Jewett that I inherited from my father -- I am proud to be the 4th generation to own this little piece of heaven on earth.
