I live in the City of Edinburgh, Scotland although I am originally from the Highlands of Scotland.I live near Warriston Cemetery, which is a Victorian Cemetery in Edinburgh that through many years of neglect has become overgrown and vandalised. Many of the headstones have become damaged beyond repair and many others are buried under vegetation. I find it sad to see the graves of people so forgotten and neglected and so much history lost.Recently a couple of inspirational people Bob Reinhardt and Caroline Gerard formed a group "Friends of Warriston Cemetery" to attempt to restore the cemetery. This is their website http://restinpixels.us/Friends_of_Warriston_Cemetery.html I joined the group and we began to clean up the cemetery. If you have time look at the pictures on the Find A Grave site of Thomas MacBean Glen where you will see some before and after pictures of some of the monuments in the cemetery and see how badly neglected they were.Another of the monuments that we discovered buried under several feet of vegetation was that of Luis A. Da Camara.I was touched by the idea of this young man from Madeira being buried so far from his home and family and then his gravestone becoming lost in the undergrowth. I decided to post some details of his gravestone on the internet to see if anyone could identify him. I posted his details on a web site dedicated to Madeira and Madeiran genealogy. Through that website I was contacted by Find A Grave contributor Cheri Mello who suggested that I post a picture of the Luis A. Da Camara gravestone on the Find A Grave website. I had no previous knowledge of the Find A Grave website but did as Cheri suggested. That got me thinking that I should post photos of other gravestones that we had found so that they could be viewed by family seeking information about their relatives and in order that they are preserved for history. Along with posting photos of monuments in Warriston Cemetery I have also posted photos from some other Edinburgh Cemeteries and photos from some cemeteries i have visited on my travels around Scotland. It is my intention to save the details on these monuments before they are lost. I would not wish to offend anyone in any way with anything that I post here. If something does concern you please drop me a note.I am relatively new to this web site as you can see. If you think that I might be able to assist you in any way please drop me a note.
