As a real granddaughter of a Civil War veteran, I have always been interested in our "roots". My family, and that of my late husband's, have been Nebraska residents since the homestead days. As a school girl I helped serve the servicemen at the North Platte Canteen and later was quoted in Bob Green's best selling book about "Once Upon A Town". I earned my pilot's license as a 40 year old farm/house wife. I spearheaded the placing of a Nebraska State Historical Marker to commemorate a B-17 airplane crash that took the lives of eight young airmen in 1943, near to Wood River that I had witnessed. As a U.S. Census worker, I was awarded a Bronze medal for accuracy and efficiency in 1989. (One of 12 awarded that year). We raised 4 children and now have 9 grands and 11 great grand kids.
